Couple win $60m while buying chicken feed
The lottery winner of $60m quickly ran into rural store for some chicken feed when she discovered her family had won Alberta’s biggest jackpot ever.
Brett McCoy and Robin Walker, a rural couple, won $60 million on Lotto Max jackpot- the biggest jackpot in Alberta history. They bought the ticket together from McLeod Trading Post, 35 kilometres’ northeast of Edson.
The happy couple was buying chicken feed at the corner store when they realised they had won the massive prize.
“I ran into the store to buy chicken feed and some treats for my kids,” Walker said in a statement. She scanned the winning Lotto Max quick pick ticket, a “whole bunch of numbers came up on the screen.”
She had initially thought they had won £60,000 but had “counted the zeros” wrong.
The Yellowhead County couple won the entire $60 million jackpot that evening, setting a record for the biggest lottery prize yet won in Alberta.
The Lotto Max jackpot was from the Sept 22 draw. McCoy had cashed another winning lottery ticket of $100 at the same time they bought the big winner.
This was the only winning ticket sold across Canada to match all seven Lotto Max numbers. The winning Lotto Max numbers were 2, 10, 37, 38, 43 and 47 with six selections and the Extra entered. Furthermore, the couple’s winning ticket was an $11 quick pick.
“It still doesn’t seem real,” Walker said.
The couple run a hobby farm and have four kids aged 4-16 years old.
With such a massive win, the couple are not in a rush to make any big decisions. Before their win, McCoy said the couple had dreamed of expanding their farm.
“She can buy all the chickens she wants now,” McCoy laughs.
Walker said they are “common, everyday, blue-collar Albertans” from the “bush” and aren’t used to big spending. They did, however buy a new truck that they drove to pick up the cheque.
