Man wins $1M PowerBall prize due to mix-up

A Michigan man is now $1 million richer after a ticket-buying mix-up led him to pick up more Powerball tickets. One of his extra lines hit the big time, lottery officials say.How’s your Luck!

Michael Doyle, 58, of Belleville, made his typical weekly stop at the Belleville Fuel Mart to buy Mega Millions and Powerball tickets on Friday and “didn’t think about them again” after putting them in his wallet, he told Michigan Lottery officials.

“The next day, I stopped to get gas on my way to a friend’s house, and when I opened my wallet to pay for the gas, my lottery tickets fell out,” Doyle said. “That’s when I saw I had Lotto 47 tickets instead of Powerball. So, I asked the clerk at the gas station for four Powerball Easy Picks.”

One of those tickets matched the five white Powerball numbers – 6, 21, 41, 52 and 62 — drawn on Saturday, good enough for a $1 million win. Doyle said he wasn’t even aware that someone bought a million-dollar winning ticket in Belleville until seeing local news reports.

“I immediately checked my tickets and have been happy and nervous ever since I realized I was the winner because $1 million is so much money,” said Doyle, who claimed his prize on Wednesday at the Michigan Lottery’s headquarters.

Doyle said he’s looking to buy a new car and then retire with his newfound wealth.

“For all the times we’ve said: ‘We wish we could,’ but didn’t have the money, now we can,” Doyle said.
